World Conference 2010 Legislation

Bellow I will attempt to keep updated a list of the currently published legislative items for the 2010 World Conference of Community of Christ. Do to the nature of the topics dealt with Community of Christ has chosen choose not to place any items on the denominational web page for the time being stating in part: (the legislation is now on the Community of Christ website)

Several Expanded World Church Leadership Council members serve in places where topics raised by particular legislative items have never been, or are illegal, to discuss. Placing these legislative items on the Community of Christ Web site would do harm to our faithful leaders in these nations. To ensure the well-being of our leaders and members, no legislation will be posted on the Community of Christ Web site at this time.

On 21 December 2009 they announced that on 4 January 2010 legislation will be available in Spanish, English, and French on the church’s website stating:

Last week the First Presidency requested the Council of Twelve to prayerfully consider if it was appropriate and timely for the legislation being considered at World Conference to be posted online. The entire leadership team recognizes the sensitivity and potential difficulty created by this action due to particular issues coming before the Conference.

The Council of Twelve supports posting the legislation online in English, French and Spanish and joins the Presidency in calling the entire church to prayer as we come together in April.

All World Conference legislation will be posted on January 4 at www.CofChrist.org/wc2010.

Before reaching the Legislation on the Community of Christ site  the following statement is found:

The following legislation, proposed by one Community of Christ team and 14 mission centers from across the world, has been submitted to the 2010 World Conference, April 10–17. Delegates and members are asked to join the World Church Leadership Council in prayer, discussion, and discernment, believing the Holy Spirit will move in World Conference legislative sessions to help delegates make decisions that will bless all of creation.

World Conference leaders acknowledge the following resolutions may cause individuals and groups frustration because of differences in their personal, scriptural, theological, legal, and sacramental perspectives. As an international community of faith, this issue is complicated further by the diverse customs and languages of Community of Christ members.

As the body of Christ, it is imperative that Community of Christ approaches legislative issues with great care, understanding, and sensitivity to the voices and perspectives of members throughout the world. As an international church represented in nearly fifty nations, it is important that we learn to talk about divisive issues without separating from the body.

We have been counseled as a church to “Listen together to one another, without judgment or predisposition. Do not assume that the answers to matters of conflict have yet been perceived. There is much labor to be done. Reason together in love, and the Spirit of truth will prevail” (Doctrine and Covenants 162:5c).

Whatever the outcome of these legislative issues, Community of Christ members must commit to ongoing dialogue while lovingly upholding our common faith in Jesus Christ and the mission of the church.

Each item is further formatted with the following heading:

The following will be considered by delegates of the 2010 World Conference, where common consent will approve or vote down this proposed legislation.

and a  watermark of "For Consideration at 2010 World Conference"

However these statements are not 100% accurate. as it is possible that 1 or more of them will be ruled out of order. In which case they will not be considered by the body, and not be voted on. Also there is a chance that the World Conference will choose not to vote upon an item and instead refer the item to another body, or that will vote on it but only after amending it…. I think one could see amendment as still being under the approve or vote down, but referral is not and should be included in the list, especially as it seems the WC of late like to refer things rather than vote on them.

They are being have been sent to Mission Center leadership to distribute. Some mission centers are have been providing the items on their web sites  along with other mediums. Items are also published in the official organ of the church the monthly periodical Herald. This page lists item numbers, titles, and from where they came. Each item will have a page of its own. When available links are also provided to the body submitting the legislative item to give some limited context of the group presenting the item to the World Conference.

Statement from World Church Regarding Legislation:

World Church leaders acknowledge that the following resolutions may cause individuals and groups pain and frustration because of differences in their personal, scriptural, theological, legal, and sacramental perspectives. As an international community of faith, this issue is further complicated by the diverse customs and languages of our members.
As the body of Christ, it is imperative that the church approaches these legislative issues with great care, understanding, and sensitivity to the voices and perspectives of members throughout the world.
While the church seeks agreement or common consent in important matters, we must commit to ongoing dialogue and lovingly upholding our common faith in Jesus Christ and the mission of the church.

  1. Joyce Charles:

Looks like a cut and dried agreement of First Presidency and Mission Centers around the world. Deligates didn’t even have an opportunity to voice their opinion. That doesn’t represent the voice of the people at all.

  2. Lyle II:

I was at the conference, and I heard many delegates share their understandings… Mission Centers are made up of the people.
We seek to represent as a people our understanding of the Holy’s call to us, and our understandings on how best to embrace that call and live out the vision and mission of Christ, I think in many ways we did that this week…

  3. Shell:

Absolutely – I was at Conference also, and there was a huge range of diversity (culturally and diversity in beliefs (or both). Many voices were heard, with many different beliefs. I can affirm that the voice of the people were well and truly represented at conference, and in the best way possible. I was also moved by the way that such a diverse church, made up of people from so many different nations and faith backgrounds, was able to share peacefully and respectfully. It was an incredibly beautiful, inspiring event.
